What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis occurs when the thick band of tissue connecting the toes to the heel bone (the plantar fascia) becomes inflamed, often due to repetitive stretching and tearing. When this happens, it can cause stabbing pain along the bottom of the foot, near the heel. This pain is typically at its worst when someone first starts walking after not moving their feet for an extended period—for example, when they get out of bed in the morning—or when someone stands in one spot for a long time.
